1 in 5 Australian mammals are on the endangered species list.

That’s why from 16 November until 16 December, I’m digging deep for the land I love.

I’ve committed to running/walking/rolling every day to protect our native species and their precious habitats.

Please support me and help protect the land we all call home by making a tax deductible donation to Bush Heritage Australia.

Together, we can help restore the bush and protect our native species.

Reflections on the Groundwork Challenge: week 1

Monday 23rd Nov
We’re one week in, and I am absolutely loving the groundwork challenge. Well, I say that, but I must admit, some aspects of it have certainly been a challenge. At the beginning I was concerned about fitting the 5ks a day into my life, and that has proven to be a legitimate problem - there were a few days where I only managed just under 4ks, but there were other days where I did 6+, so I figure it has evened out at around 5ks/day. Apparently I have walked over 40 kms this week, and given that my total goal is 100ks by December 16, I count that as a win!
And the walking in the bush bit - aaaahhh, it really is so wonderful. In a time where everything feels busy, stressful, and a little out of control, it has actually been a nice commitment to try and walk at least 5kms a day - a great opportunity to slow my thoughts down and de-stress. It reminds me that it is something I should commit myself to all the time, and not just when I have signed up for something like the groundwork challenge. It has also been so lovely to see how the kids have embraced the challenge too, and while I do love walks on my own, we have had some beautiful times together out on our adventures in the bush this week.
Another recent obstacle that has presented itself is a horrible virus that I have managed to pick up (not COVID!) - it’s left me feeling pretty rough the past couple of days and I have very little energy. But the good thing about walking with the kids is that it’s generally pretty gentle going, it just takes a little longer - more time to enjoy and appreciate our beautiful surroundings! I just hope it clears up soon and doesn’t get too much worse.
I want to finish by heartily thanking the amazing people who have sponsored me and my Trad for Climate team so far. Your support gives me strength and encouragement to continue to throw myself into this challenge. Thank you!

Groundwork Challenge Day 1!

Monday 16th Nov
When I first signed up for the groundwork challenge I thought it would be a breeze. I mean, the kids and I are out in the bush around our home pretty much daily. It’s our happy place. But then reality hit home. Our lives are really busy now that lockdown is over and the kids are back at kinder, and I’m teaching in a local school one day a week, on top of aallll the regular day-to-day things that need to happen, plus the kids can’t walk that far or fast and I have pledged to do 5ks a day. I began to feel unsure about how I could make the challenge work. My feeling now is that it will involve some night hikes after the kids are in bed, which I’m quite excited about - I love night hikes but haven’t done one in ages! But today, day 1 of the challenge, the kids and I did 2 walks together and hit the 5 k target! Woohoo!
The first walk was along the Domino Rail Trail in Trentham. It was beautiful and sunny, and protected from the wind on this very blustery day. However, I was disappointed to see soooo many weeds along the side of the track. I’ve noticed this problem with rail trails all over Victoria - I understand that these things are often maintained by volunteers, but it is such a shame to see invasive species running so rampant and clearly not being dealt with adequately.
Later, after dinner, the kids wanted to do a ‘night hike’ themselves so we did another little walk around the block and through the bush out the back of our place. It was the most beautiful evening  and light. The bush was showing off with all the gorgeous little wildflowers in bloom; lilies, daisies, and pea flowers danced in the breeze and evening sun like fairies, and my confidence in completing this task was renewed. So often the bush reminds me of who I am and what I’m capable of. X
